In 2011, the Political Science graduate Florian Sigmund spent 4 months at AWO International’s Regional Office South Asia. Among other tasks, he also prepared a study on Nepal’s informal economy for the office in view of the fact that many of the beneficiaries of AWO International’s project interventions in South Asia are to be found working under informal work conditions and that future project interventions in South Asia shall even more focus on the challenges that the informal economy poses to South Asia’s poor and marginalised, especially in urban contexts.
The study looks into conceptual problems when dealing with such terms as ‘informal sector’ or ‘informal economy’, gives interesting insights into the state of affairs of Nepal’s informal economy (making comprehensive use of the scarce data that is available),

AWO International South Asia team visits Berlin Head Office
From 6th to 12th of an incredibly mild November the local staff of AWO International’s Kathmandu office as well as its two Pune-based local finance coordinators visited the head office in Berlin. Their stay included long working sessions on such diverse topics as project management, financial monitoring, public relations or humanitarian aid. In addition, the South Asia team had the chance to visit various projects of AWO such as the ‘Lankwitzer Werkstaetten’, a workshop for disabled people, an AWO Migration Centre in Berlin or a project aiming at helping delinquent women by offering employment opportunities through participation in a sewing workshop.
